Logging on and off a content area

If you've already logged on to Oracle Portal with your Single Sign-On login via the Login Server, you are automatically logged on to all content areas for which you have access privileges. The following steps can be ignored.

You must have the appropriate access privileges to log onto a content area.

Before you log on to an Oracle Portal content area, you can view only those folders that are available to public users and click any links on the navigation bar, such as the content area logo, Content Area Map, Search box, folder links, and so on.

Any user who knows the URL of a content area and can connect to the machine where it is stored can view the content area as a public user. However, content areas offer another level of access. You can restrict access to certain folders or items in a content area to specific authorized users. This also means that you can grant authorized users the ability to add content themselves. This model of distributed ownership removes the typical bottleneck associated with content maintenance.

When you first log on, you see your own personalized version of the content area home page. This personal home page lists the folders you own (under Owned folders banner) and any search criteria you may have saved (under Saved Searches banner).

After you log on, you can also view both public folders as well as those to which you have been granted the appropriate folder privileges; such as Own Folder, View Content, Create With Approval, Edit Style, or Manage Items. Depending on what the content area administrator or folder owner authorized, you may also have the privilege to edit items in folders, administer folders, or manage aspects of the content area itself.

To log on to and logging off a content area:

  1. Click the Log On link on the navigation bar.

  2. Enter your Single Sign-On user name and password. If unknown, your content area administrator will be able to provide this information to you.

  1. Click OK.

The Administration link and the Log Out link appear in the navigation bar.

  1. If you want to log off, click the Log Out link.

If you are authorized to perform any edit functions on a given folder, the Edit Folder link appears at the upper-right corner of the page to indicated that you are in Edit mode. If you do not have such authority, you are only allowed to view the content (View mode).
