Setting up the Oracle Portal environment

Setting up the Oracle Portal environment is a collaborative process between many different users: the DBA, the portal administrator, content area administrators, and so on. The DBA can complete any task within Oracle Portal, but he or she may wish to delegate certain responsibilities to the portal administrator. Likewise, although the portal administrator can complete any task on any content area, the content area administrator will most likely be responsible for setting up and maintaining a given content area.

If you are the DBA, you must:

Complete the configuration tasks as specified in the Installation Guide. This includes:

  • Installing Oracle Portal 3.0, either in a single instance or in the distributed mode.

  • Fine tune the middle tier (i.e. iAS Web server, modplsql, and JServ) to ensure maximum scalability.

  • Create schemas and grant privileges for applications

    • For every application, the DBA must create an application schema to store the database objects associated with the application components.

    • Additionally, the DBA may need to grant database privileges to the application schema on the specific tables/views the application will use.

  • Grant access to the Database tab in the Navigator. By default, only the DBA has access to this when the product is first installed. The DBA must explicitly grant access to other users.

Set up the application development environment so users can develop Oracle Portal applications.
