Adding regions to a page

The number and configuration of regions on a page is originally determined by the layout that is applied to the page during its creation. Subsequently, you can edit a page and use the icons on the Portlets tab to add or delete regions.

When you choose a layout during page creation, a copy of the layout is made that applies only to that page. Thus, any changes that you make to the regions on the Portlets tab apply to that page only. The changes do not affect the original layout. For example, if you create a page using the Two Column Layout, then edit the page to add another region, the new region belongs to that particular page only. You will not see the new region if you create another page using the Two Column Layout.

Note

Only the page owner, the portal administrator, or users who have the Manage privilege for this or All pages may change the layout by adding regions to the page.

To add a regions to a page:

  1. If you are in the Create Page Wizard, make sure you are at the Add Portlets step (step 3 of 4).

If you are already on the page, click Edit Page at the top of the page.

Otherwise, access the Navigator, navigate to the page you want to work on, then click Edit.

Note: You can add regions only when you are creating or editing the page (i.e., making changes that affect everyone's version of the page), not when you are customizing your private version of the page. If you were allowed to add regions to your private version of the page, the page would be vastly different from the public one that everyone else sees.

  2. Use the Add Row and Add Column icons to add a row or column to the existing layout. For example, say your page currently has a single region:

    Page with single region

Click Add Row to create a region of the same width directly below the current region (that is, add another row):

Page with two regions as rows

Click Add Column to create a region to the right of the current region (that is, add another column):

Page with three regions (two rows where the top row is divided into two columns)

Note: the column is only the height of the row in which it was added, not the height of the entire page.

  3. Click Close or Finish, if you're done, or click Next if you're in the process of creating a page.
