What is a region?

A region is an area on a page that displays information provided by a portlet. The configuration of the regions on a page is called the page's layout. When you create a page, you choose a layout to define the initial configuration of the regions for the page. Oracle Portal includes several layouts to get you started, for example the Two Column Layout:

A layout with two columns

After choosing the initial layout of the page, you can change the number and configuration of the regions using the region's icons. You can divide this space into columns (Add Column) or rows (Add Row), and edit the region to specify it's width (Edit Region). When you edit a region, you can also specify how to display the portlets within it, such as whether to display them in rows or columns, how much space to provide around them, and whether to include headers and borders. You can also add tabs to the region (Add Tab) to effectively create independent pages within the page.

Note: When you apply a layout to a page, a copy of that layout is created. Any changes you subsequently make to the regions within the page affect only the copy of the layout, not the original layout.

You can control the extent to which users who view your page can modify the regions within it, if at all.

Note

  • Although both folders and pages employ the concept of regions, they are completely separate entities.

    • A folder is part of a Oracle Portal content area, divided into regions and containing items or subfolders.

    • A page is a Web page whose regions contain data exclusively from portlet providers.

In addition, the number and placement of a folder's regions are determined by one of five pre-configured layouts. A page's layout is more free-form, and may contain as many or as few regions as required.
