What is a page layout?

A page layout defines the geometry of a page by controlling how many regions will appear on the page and how they are organized. The simplest layout consists of a single region that covers the entire page. (A region is an area in which a discrete block of information--called a portlet--is placed.) Each region has its own specifications regarding how portlets placed within it are displayed (as rows or columns) and how wide the region is relative to other regions in the row.

When you select a layout for a page, a copy of the layout is made. Any changes you make to the page's layout from that point on affect only that page. If you've applied the same layout to several pages and you want to make the same change to each of them, you must make that change to each page individually--changing the layout will not affect the pages. Even if you delete the layout, the pages adhering to it are not affected.
