Setting up the search feature

Setting up the search feature involves specifying a Search Results page, an advanced search link, how many results to display on a page, and which Internet search engine to use. Additionally, you can set up interMedia Text searching, if desired.

You must be the portal administrator to set up the search feature.

To set up the search feature:

  1. Click Search Settings in the Services portlet.

Note: By default, the Services portlet is on the Oracle Portal home page's Administer tab.

  2. In the Page Name field, enter the name of the page that contains the search results portlet. To select a page, click Browse Pages. The default is the Search Results page.

  3. In the Advanced Search Link field, enter the link to use for the advanced search. If you have created a customized search engine that you want to use for advanced searches throughout Oracle Portal, you can specify its link here. The default is the Oracle Portal Advanced Search link.

  4. In the Hits Per Page field, enter the number of search results to display on each Search Results page. For example, if you specify 10, the first 10 results are displayed on the first Search Results page, the next 10 on the second page, and so on.

  5. In the URL field, enter the URL of the Internet search engine. This allows users to extend their search if they don't find the information they need in the content areas. The URL must be fully formed and include any associated parameters, along with the final equal sign (=) for passing the search words.

For example, to use Yahoo as the Internet search engine, enter:

    http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=

  6. In the Link Text field, enter the text that users click to access the specified Internet search engine and send it their search criteria. This text is displayed as a link on the Search Results page.

For example, if you use Yahoo as the Internet search engine, you can enter Yahoo as the link text.

  7. You can also set up interMedia Text searching.

  8. Click OK.
