Creating a custom folder type

If the base folder types provided do not provide enough flexibility, you can create additional custom folder types to meet your requirements.

When you create a custom folder type, you are not creating a new folder in your content area. You are creating a new type of folder in addition to the folder types already defined. Custom folder types are added to the list that content area administrators and folder owners are offered when they create a new folder.

You must be the content area administrator, the portal administrator, or have Manage privileges on All Content Areas to create a custom folder type.

To create a custom folder type:

  1. In the Navigator, click the Content Areas tab.

  2. Navigate to the following path:

Path: Content Areas > ContentAreaDisplayName > Custom Types

where ContentAreaDisplayName is the content area in which you want to create the custom folder type.

Note: If you want to share this custom folder type across multiple content areas, create it in the Shared Objects content area.

  3. In the Folder Types row, click Create.

  4. In the Name field, enter a name for the custom folder type. The name is used internally only.

Note: The name must be unique within the content area, is limited to 30 characters, and can contain only alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) and the underscore character (_); no spaces or special characters.

  5. In the Display Name field, enter a descriptive name for the custom folder type. The display name is used in the Navigator and in the Folder Wizard Folder Type list, so shorter display names are better.

Note: The display name is limited to 60 characters, and can contain any character, including spaces.

  6. In the Base Folder Type list, choose the base folder type from which to inherit attributes.

  7. Click Create.

A message is displayed at the top of the page to confirm that the folder type has been created.

  8. You can now either click the folder type link in the confirmation message to further define your new custom folder type, create additional custom folder types, or click Close to return to the Navigator.
