Adding a portlet to a page

Each region on a page may contain one or more portlets. Whether those portlets are displayed as rows or columns depends on what you specify in the Edit Region box. See Specifying region properties for details.

The steps to add a portlet to a page vary slightly depending on whether you want the portlet to be visible to all users of the page, or just yourself.

Note

  • With regards to page customization, it is useful to think of two versions of a page: the version that everyone sees, and the one that individual users see. Different levels of customization apply to each version.

    • To add a portlet to the default version of a page that everyone sees, you must be the page creator or portal administrator, or have the Manage or Edit Portlets privilege for this or all pages.

    • To add a portlet to your own private version of a page, you must be the page creator or portal administrator, or have the Full or Add-Only Customization privilege for this or all pages.

  • When you add a portlet that is itself a page to a page, significant table nesting occurs in the underlying HTML. If you are using a Netscape browser, serious performance problems can occur when the page is rendered. It is not advisable to nest pages within pages in a Netscape environment.

To add a portlet to the default version of a page:

  1. If you are in the Create Page Wizard, make sure you are at the Add Portlets step (step 3 of 4).

If you are already on the page, at the top of the page click Edit Page.

Otherwise, access the Navigator, navigate to the page you want to work on, then click Edit.

  2. In the region where you want to add the portlets, click Add Portlets.

  3. Click Portlet Repository in the path at the bottom of the Available Portlets list to navigate to the root folder of the Portlet Repository, if necessary.

  4. Click the name of the provider you want to see under Seeded Providers or Other Providers. The portlets are displayed, grouped by the categories to which they've been assigned.

  5. To preview a portlet before adding it to your page, click Preview next to the name of the portlet.

  6. To add a portlet to your page, click the portlet name. Multiple selects are not supported.

The order of the portlets in Selected Portlets reflects the order in which they will appear on the page, from top to bottom (for portlets displayed in rows) or from left to right (for portlets displayed in columns). To change the order of the portlets, highlight the portlet name and use the arrows in between the two lists.

  7. Click OK to return to the Portlets tab.

  8. Click Close or Finish, if you're done, or click Next if you're in the process of creating a page.

To add a portlet to your own version of a page:

  1. If you are already on the page, at the top of the page click Customize.

Otherwise, access the Navigator, navigate to the page you want to work on, then click Customize.

  2. In the region where you want to add the portlets, click Add Portlets.

  3. Click Portlet Repository in the path at the bottom of the Available Portlets list to navigate to the root folder of the Portlet Repository, if necessary.

  6. To add a portlet to your page, click the portlet name. Multiple selects are not supported.

  7. Click OK to return to Customize Page.

  8. Click Close to display the page or return to the Navigator.
