Setting global privileges for a group

Global privileges allow you to grant a global privilege level to a group for all objects of a given type. For example, you might want to give your Web Designer group Manage privileges for all styles throughout Oracle Portal.

Setting global privileges for a group is the same as setting global privileges for many users at once. All the members of a group have the same privilege level: you can't set conflicting privileges for a group member through the Users portlet or some other means.

By default, the Groups portlet is located on the Oracle Portal Home Page's Administer tab.

You must be the group creator, group owner, or the portal administrator to set global privileges for a group. Users with the Manage privilege for groups may also set global privileges.

To set global privileges for a group:

If you are not already in the Create Group wizard, begin with step 1.

If you are creating a group, begin with step 4.

  1. In the Groups portlet, click and select the group you want to work with from the list.

If you don't see the group you're looking for, you are not the group's owner and may not change the group's global privileges.

  2. Click Edit.

    Edit Group is displayed.

  3. Click the Privileges tab.

  4. Use the lists to select a privilege level for each object type. A few things to note:

  • Each privilege in the list includes all other privileges below it. For example, if a user can manage page styles, he or she can also view, publish, and create page styles.

  • The Manage privilege not only allows a user to manage objects of a given type, but to also grant privileges to other users/groups.

  • If the Create privilege for an object type is not expressly granted to a user, either here or through the Users portlet, the user will not be able to create an object of that type.

  • The None privilege simply means that no privilege has been granted for this object type. Without it, each user/group would have to be granted a privilege for each object type, which is not terribly desirable.

  • See Create Group: Privileges for a description of each privilege level.

  1. Click OK or Finish.

Note

  • Global privileges are not reflected on the Access tabs for individual objects. For example, if you grant the Manage privilege for All Pages to a particular group or user, you will not see that group or user listed on the Access tab for individual pages.
