Allowing folder owners to enable folder caching

Folder caching speeds up the rendering of a folder and its contents since previously rendered pages are stored in the Oracle Portal document repository and re-displayed when next requested. Thus, instead of rendering a page each time it is requested, Oracle Portal serves up the cached version of the page, which loads the page much faster.

You must be the content area administrator, the portal administrator, or have Manage privileges on All Content Areas to allow folder owners to enable folder caching.

To allow folder owners to enable folder caching:

  1. In the Navigator, click the Content Areas tab.

  2. Navigate to the root path.

  3. In the row for your content area, click Edit Properties.

  4. Select Enable Folder Caching.

Note: This does not mean that folder contents are cached. To cache the contents of a folder, the folder owner must enable folder caching at the folder level.

  5. In the Folder Cache Retention Period field, enter the number of hours before the folder cache becomes invalid.

    Notes:

    • For example, if you set the Folder Cache Retention Period to 1 hour and a user visits the Products folder at 10:00 a.m., it is stored in the folder cache. If the user revisits the Products folder at 11:00 a.m., the folder is retrieved from the cache. However, if the user revisits the Products folder at 11:30 a.m., the cache is no longer valid and so the folder is reloaded from the server.

    • If any changes are made to the folder, for example if items are added or the style is changed, the cache is invalidated and the folder is reloaded from the server the next time the user displays it, regardless of whether the Folder Cache Retention Period has expired or not.

  6. Click OK.
