Choosing a default page style

In some cases, a page's style is hardcoded by the page creator. This means that regardless of who views the page, the page appears in the same set of fonts and colors for every user. In other cases, the user gets to decide which style determines the appearance of the page. This occurs when the page creator selects <Use User's Default Style> when asked to assign a style to the page. When you display a page of this type, whatever style you have chosen as your default is applied to the page. In this way, you and your neighbor can be looking at the exact same page in completely different sets of fonts and colors.

Default styles work like this for pages with <Use User's Default Style> specified:

  • If you've chosen a personal default style, that style is used.

  • If you do not choose a default style, but you belong to a default group for which a default style has been chosen, that style is used.

  • If you do not choose a default style and you do not belong to a default group, or no default style has been set for your group, the system default style is used. The system default style is determined by the portal administrator.

To choose a default style:

  1. Access the Navigator and click the Pages tab.

  2. If you're not already at the top level, click Pages in the Path.

  3. Click Page Styles to display all the page styles to which you have access.

  4. To see a preview of a page style, click the page style name in the Name column.

To select a page style as your default, click Make Default in the Actions column.

From now on, any page that calls for <Use User's Default Style> is rendered in the style you've identified. In addition, the style you've selected appears in bold in the Navigator.
